Established in March 1978 through the amalgamation of Observatory Boys’ High and Observatory Girls’ High, Rhodes High is situated in Little Mowbray under the shadow of Devil’s Peak. The school, embodying its motto, “Persevere”, has struggled through some dark times when numbers dwindled alarmingly in the early 1990’s. Today it is a thriving and integrated school that serves a wide community.
During 2005 Rhodes High was declared a Dinaledi School. Subsequently, the school was included in the UCT Mathematics and Science Education Project (MSEP). The school plays a leading role in ensuring that previously disadvantaged learners pass Mathematics, Life Sciences and Physical Science as part of their Senior Certificate.
Rhodes High has served the wider community by offering Computer Studies Higher Grade and now Information Technology to Rhodes High learners as well as to learners from surrounding schools. Lessons in these learning areas are conducted in the school’s own computer laboratories, funded through fund-raising activities carried out by the parent community as well as appeals to the business community.
